Rose Teruko Sumoge Murahashi was born in Hood River, Oregon, on April 22, 1937, the youngest of 11 children born to Shinjiro and Masa Suzuki Sumoge. Rose peacefully passed in Gresham, Oregon, on Aug. 16, 2025.
She was 6 years old when her family was incarcerated in several internment camps during World War II, including Tule Lake and Heart Mountain. Upon their return to Hood River in 1945, Rose grew up in Oak Grove on the family farm. She graduated from Wy’east High School in 1955. Following graduation, she moved to Portland, Oregon, and worked for the Naito Brothers at Norcrest China. She met Lawrence Murahashi and wed on Sept. 21, 1957, in Vancouver, Washington. They lived in Portland for the entirety of their 55 years of marriage.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband Larry; her parents; and all 10 of her siblings, Yoshio, Toshio, Chiyo, Fred, Aiko, Joe, Tom, Bob, Mitsuru, and Mary.
She is survived by her three sons, Kent (Cathy), Mark (Carol), and Scott (Cindy); seven grandchildren, Laura, Allie (Derikk), Holly, David, Kayla, Bailey and Brenton; and two great-grandsons, Alek, and Jordan, who brought her much joy in her twilight years.
A committal service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 9:30 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in her name be given to Grace Point Community Church, PO Box 58271, Tukwila, WA 98138.
