THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks started the 2025 season very similarly to 2024, as they won their Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Class 4A football non-league opener at home, 27-6, over the Class 3A Umatilla High Vikings (0-1).
The Riverhawks, guided by second-year Coach Nate Timmons, also won their season opener a year ago, 20-6, over the Vikings.
“Getting a win in the first game is a good way to start the season and it was very similar contest to the game a year ago against Umatilla,” said Timmons. “I’m super proud of the kids, and they all played very well. I’m kind of excited now to see what we can do throughout the rest of the season."
The Riverhawks built a 13-0 lead after the first quarter and they extended their advantage to 27-0 at halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, Umatilla scored a touchdown in the fourth for the final margin.
The Riverhawks were led offensively by quarterback Logan Mitchell (5-for-8 passing, 92 yards and two touchdowns). Bryson Cates (seven carries, 69 yards rushing) and Braden Brost (two catches, 71 yards receiving) also contributed to the Riverhawks’ offense. Cates led the Riverhawk defense with a team-high eight tackles. The Riverhawks had 215 yards of total offense, and they held the Vikings to 89 yards from scrimmage.
The Riverhawks play 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in a non-league contest at Molalla High. The Riverhawks lost, 25-14, to the Indians in last year’s match up in Tri-Valley Conference play.
“Molalla always has a very good football program, so the game on Friday will definitely be a good test for us,” said Timmons. “They’ll be a lot stronger opponent than we faced in the match-up versus Umatilla.”
