HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley High (HRV) Eagles are hoping to make a second straight postseason appearance this season in girls soccer after qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time in five years in 2024.
The Eagles, guided by new head Coach Kevin Haspela, opened their 15-match regular season Aug. 28 at home playing Class 6A Century High to a 1-1 draw. HRV opened its 2024 season with a 4-3 victory over the Jaguars in Hillsboro.
“This was a good first match overall for our team, but I think we had some first-game jitters,” said Haspela, who replaced Leonor Lopez as coach.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead on freshman midfielder Ellie Kinsfogel’s goal in the 49th minute. The goal scoring play started when senior midfielder and team captain Magnolia Clermont passed to senior captain/midfielder Hazel Haspela. She delivered a left-footed crossing pass to Kinsfogel, who fired a shot into the net.
Coach Haspela said, “I thought it was just a beautiful team goal for us. It was back and forth in the second half, with play opening up and both teams getting scoring chances. We displayed some good passing throughout the game, and we had good consistent intensity level of play from everyone. We played solid defense, and the wings were making confident runs forward while we were attacking on offense.”
The Jaguars tied the game with less than two minutes remaining, converting a penalty kick after an HRV foul inside the 18-yard box.
Last year, the Eagles took sixth place in the Northwest Oregon Conference with a 3-4-1 record (8-6-2 overall) and they earned a No. 14 ranking. The Eagles lost, 6-0, at No. 3-ranked Caldera High in Bend to conclude their season.
Hood River was scheduled to play road games at Southridge in Beaverton on Sept. 2, at Sandy on Sept. 4, and then hosts Liberty on Sept. 10.
