She was born Dec. 29, 1941, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the youngest of three children to Melvin Clinton and Fern Ida (Halverson) Shefstad. She spent her childhood years growing up and attending schools in Bonners Ferry, Davenport, Wash., Harrington, Wash., Umatilla, Ore., and settling in The Dalles at age 14 where she finished out her schooling.

She married Larry Browning Shimp on Sept. 3, 1959, in The Dalles. She worked at The Dalles Pharmacy as a “soda jerk” and assistant bookkeeper through high school. In 1969 she went to work for Sears as credit manager until a serious railroad accident involving her husband, Larry, made resigning necessary. After three years of nursing her husband through his rehabilitation, she went to work for The Dalles Credit Bureau until about 1975, when she then quit becoming a full time “professional domestic engineer.”

She looked forward to warm weather, winter travel, loved her family, friends, gardening, hummingbirds, watching the night sky, angels and was a “garage sale goddess.”

She is survived by her husband Larry of 44 years, The Dalles; her daughters and their spouses, Jeanene and Max Sigl, Hood River; Vonnie and Mickey Long, Granbury, Texas; her son, L. Todd Shimp and his partner Nancy Scott, The Dalles; her daughter-in-law, Diane Shimp, The Dalles; her grandchildren, Amanda, Katelyn, Tharen, Joshua, Corey, Cassandra, Kurtis, Cesilee and Tyson, her sister and husband, Maxine and Denny Stuart, Westin, Ore.; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father Melvin Shefstad, her mother, Fern Shefstad and her brother, Myron Shefstad in June 2002.

Memorial services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 24 with Rev. David Clear officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory.

Jean Perkins

Jean M. Perkins, a Hood River, Ore., resident died May 20, 2003, at Columbia Basin Care Facility in The Dalles, Ore. She was 85 years of age.

She was born Nov. 27, 1916, in Union, Ore., to Morris and Mabel Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, son Keith C. Perkins and daughter Cheryl K. Cooper.

Surviving is her son, Doug Perkins and his wife Kathy of Hood River; sister Kathy Vidak of Portland, Ore., and brother Keith Miller of Sublimity, Ore. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Private services and interment were held at Pine Grove Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Ednaeyrl Nielsen

Ednaeyrl M. Nielsen, age 92 of Hood River, Ore., died May 18, 2003, at the Hood River Care Center.

Mrs. Nielsen was born on Jan. 7, 1911, near Stromsberg, Neb., to Edward Charles and Effie June (Hewitt) Mouden. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan College (University) in Lincoln, Neb., where she joined the Delta Zeta Sorority. She obtained a degree in Elementary Education and during her life taught in the States of Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, California and Oregon. While she lived in California she attended San Jose State College (University) where she was certified to teach remedial reading.

During the latter part of her career she taught reading skills to Oregon’s children. In 1943 she married Otto Nielsen and together they raised four daughters. Mrs. Nielsen was a 4-H leader and was always active in her church. She loved to cook and sew and when she had time she enjoyed working in the garden.

Mrs. Nielsen is survived by her brothers Lynn Homer Mouden of Plano, Texas and Ford Mouden of Lincoln, Neb.; her four daughters: June Stockman of Bingen, Wash., Barbara Faraone of Carlsbad, Calif., Marcia Nielsen of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Janet Nielsen of Carlsbad, Calif.

Private services are planned.

Deloris Taylor

Deloris A. “Dee” Taylor, formerly of Dallas, Ore., died at her home in Waldport, Ore., on May 1, 2003. She was 56 years of age.

Dee was born to Denton and Gladys Poole in Hood River. She graduated from Wy’east High School in 1965. She lived most of her adult life in the country just south of Dallas. She owned and operated D & G Care Home until her retirement.

Dee enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, crocheting, gardening and visiting the Oregon coast.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Maurice Poole.

Survivors include her children, Barbara Bennett, Karen Imbruglia and David Taylor, all of Independence; brother Don Poole of Hood River; sisters Ethel Jones of Hood River and Carol White of Pendleton; and eight grandchildren.

At her request there will be no services.

Betty Hobbs-Krumbah

Betty L. Hobbs-Krumbah, formerly of Hood River, died May 8, 2003, at Coos Bay, Ore. She was 66 years of age.

Betty was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Hood River to Doyle and Dora (Perkins) Hobbs. She was raised and educated in Hood River and graduated from Hood River High School in 1954. She worked for U.S. Bank in Hood River and later made her home in Salem, Oak Harbor, Wash., and Springfield, where she went to work for the State Employment Department. She has made her home in Coos Bay for the last 18 years, where she retired from the Employment Department in 1999.

Betty was married to Kenneth Krumbah from 1954 until 1968. She was married to Howard Morton from 1970 until 1980.

Betty enjoyed reading, spending time at the beach, quilting, painting, gardening, and cooking. She was always doing for someone else.

Survivors include her mother, Dora Wagner of Coos Bay; two sons, Kelly and wife, Denise Krumbah, of Jefferson, Ore., and David and wife, Kari Morton, of Aumsville, Ore.; two daughters, Karen Jacobson of Salem and Libby and husband, John Huggett, of Milwalkie; sister Vernita “Pete” Fisher of Waldport; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren with two on the way.

She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Eileen Hail, Jeanne Gaines and Sara Norenberg.

Cremation rites have been held and inurnment will be at Hood River Cemetery.

Blanche Durland

Blanche Faye Durland, of Oregon City/Canby, died May 19, 2003, at an Oregon City hospital. She was 69 years of age.

Blanche was born Sept. 4, 1933, at Morris, Okla. She moved with her family to Oregon when she was 5. She graduated from Hood River High School in 1951.

On Sept. 12, 1951, she married Joseph Howard Durland in Hood River. They lived in Hood River until 1969, then moved to Lebanon for a year before moving to their current home in Oregon City. Blanche worked for First Interstate Bank for many years and retired this past August.

While working for First National Bank Blanche was involved with Credit Women International, holding several offices, and she was a regional delegate. She was also in charge of the Strawberry Shortcake Booth for the Oregon Trail Pitchpipers at the Clackamas County Fair. She was also involved with the Oregon State Extension Family and Comnmunity Education for 10 years, being involved with state conferences, co-editor of the newsletter, president of her study group, Greenwood, and the Clackamas County Fair.

Blanche is survived by her husband Joseph of Oregon City; daughter Marquita Kudrna of Milwaukie, Ore.; son Ronald Durland of Oregon City; brother Myron Martin of Hood River; grandchildren Brady Stamps of Oak Creek, Wis.; Keri Kudrna and Laura Kudrna of Milwaukie; Cassandra, Donald, and Cheyanne Durland, all of Canby; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on May 27 at Zion Memorial Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Canby Funeral Chapel, 503-266-1144.

Ivy McDonald

Longtime Cascade Locks, Ore., resident Ivy Marie McDonald died May 14, 2003, at Columbia Basin Care Facility. She was 84 years of age.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 24, at Cascade Locks Community Church at 1 p.m., located on Benson and Watts Streets.

Marie was born June 1, 1918, in Chanie, Okla., to Oscar Lee and Samantha (Bruce) Reynolds. At an early age she and her family moved to New Mexico where she was raised and educated. In 1937 Marie and her husband moved to California where they farmed grapes and cotton.

In 1948 Marie moved to Cascade Locks, where she later owned and operated Marie’s Drive-In (now Eastwind Drive-In) for many years. Mrs. McDonald moved to The Dalles, Ore., where she lived until her passing.

Mrs. McDonald’s hobbies included quilting in the winter months and growing and tending to her garden in the summer months. Her family remembers her for always staying busy and being an extremely hard worker.

Marie is survived by her daughter Dessie Bilyeu of The Dalles, son Royce McDonald of Halfway, Ore., sister Wynona Kawyer of New Mexico, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
